National Strategies and Frameworks
Australia’s national suicide prevention strategies and frameworks provide a coordinated, whole-of-government approach to reducing suicide and its impacts. Together, they set the national direction and support consistent action across states, territories, and communities.
Description
Released in early 2025, this comprehensive strategy outlines a whole-of-government and whole-of-community approach to reduce suicide rates in Australia. It emphasizes early intervention, lived experience leadership, and addressing social determinants of suicide such as housing, financial stress, and discrimination.
This framework complements the National Strategy by defining key outcomes, indicators, and actions to measure progress in suicide prevention efforts across Australia. It supports coordinated evaluation and continuous improvement of suicide prevention initiatives.
Developed under the National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Agreement, this framework provides best practice guidance for evaluating mental health and suicide prevention programs, aiming to improve the quality and consistency of evaluations in the sector.
Published in 2021, this plan sets out the Australian Government’s commitment to supporting mental health and suicide prevention for all Australians, responding to the findings of the Productivity Commission Inquiry Report into Mental Health and the National Suicide Prevention Adviser’s Final Advice.
